Embark on a challenging hike to Punta Marguareis, the highest peak in the Ligurian Alps, offering diverse terrain and expansive views across the Marguareis Natural Park. This difficult route covers 10.5 miles (17.0 km) with a significant elevation gain of 4012 feet (1223 metres), typically taking around 7 hours and 48 minutes to complete. You will traverse alpine paths, unpaved sections, and rocky outcrops, passing through traditional architecture in Carnino before entering a unique karstic landscape with arid slopes and peat bogs.
As you plan your visit, be aware that wayfinding requires attention, especially beyond the Gola della Chiusetta and from Colle della Gaina to Punta Marguareis. Some parts of the trail involve rocky terrain where you might need to use your hands for assistance. The extensive karstic rock formations can also make orientation challenging, particularly if fog rolls in.
The trail leads you to Rifugio Don Barbera, a key point located at the Colle dei Signori, a historically important pass along the ancient "Via del Sale" (Salt Road). From Punta Marguareis, you can enjoy panoramic vistas that stretch from the Ligurian Alps all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, offering a unique perspective on the border between Italy and France. The area is also known for its "Little Dolomites" rock formations and diverse wildlife, including chamois and marmots.

Embark on a moderate hike from Carnino Superiore, a village known for its stone houses, into the unique karst landscape of Marguareis Natural Park. This route, covering 7.2 miles (11.6 km) with an elevation gain of 2365 feet (721 metres), guides you along old mule tracks through a terrain shaped by limestone formations and natural springs. You'll pass through the narrow Gola della Chiusetta, a rocky passage that opens into expansive pastoral plains. The journey culminates at the grassy pass of Colle dei Signori, offering wide views towards the French border after about 4 hours and 50 minutes of hiking.
To begin your adventure, drive to Carnino Superiore; it's accessible by car from the A6 motorway. Take the Ceva exit, then follow the Tanaro Valley to Ponte di Nava, and continue towards Upega and Carnino. You will find parking available right at the village entrance. This trail is best enjoyed during daylight hours, allowing ample time to complete the moderate ascent and descent.
This trail is notable for its passage through Piano della Chiusetta, a large meadow that was once the site of the ancient Lake of the Lords before it transformed into a peat bog. The route also offers a chance to experience the Valle dei Maestri, a beautiful valley leading up to the pass. Keep an ear out for the sound of cowbells, which often echo across the high meadows, adding to the serene atmosphere of the area.
