The Observation Tower loop from Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge offers a delightful 2.6-mile (4.2 km) easy hike, taking about 1 hour and 2 minutes with a minimal 4 feet (1 meter) of elevation gain. You'll wander through diverse coastal habitats, from managed salt marshes to dense mangrove forests, with continuous views of the Indian River Lagoon. The route culminates at an 18-foot (5.5 meter) Observation Tower, providing expansive panoramic views and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
This accessible trail is generally flat, with sections of asphalt and boardwalk, making it suitable for nearly any fitness level. Remember that pets are not allowed on the trails, except for service animals. It's a great option for a leisurely stroll, especially if you enjoy spotting wildlife.
This trail is often called the Centennial Trail, and a unique feature is its boardwalk, where each plank is engraved with the name and establishment year of every National Wildlife Refuge in the United States. It's a living history lesson as you walk, leading to Pelican Island, the nation's first National Wildlife Refuge established in 1903 to protect nesting birds.
