Here at the amphitheater, you will be surrounding by giant walls and hoodoos. This is a must-have experience when exploring the wild places outside of Flagstaff, AZ.

As you walk, you'll pass through juniper and piñon trees before reaching the striking Red Mountain Amphitheater, where you can observe dramatic geological formations and ancient erosional pillars.

    To access the trail, you will find it located approximately 25 miles northwest of Flagstaff. Be prepared for a sturdy six-foot wooden ladder that you must ascend to enter the volcanic amphitheater; this might require assistance if you are hiking with a dog. The trail surface can have loose dirt, and sections of the wash may contain large boulders, so wear appropriate footwear.

    This trail offers a distinctive experience by leading you directly into the heart of an ancient volcanic cinder cone within the Coconino National Forest. You will gain 383 feet (117 metres) in elevation over approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes, making it a perfect short adventure. As you walk, you will notice juniper, piñon pine, and ponderosa pine dotting the open terrain, offering panoramic views that stretch to the distant San Francisco Peaks. The highlight is undoubtedly the Red Mountain Amphitheater, where you can explore the impressive erosional pillars, known as hoodoos, within what feels like the core of an ancient volcano.

    This trail is generally well-marked, ensuring an easy navigation experience in the Coconino National Forest. Be aware that the latter half of the route follows a wash, which can be quite sandy underfoot. To enter the main amphitheater, you will encounter a 6-foot ladder, which adds a unique element to your journey. Dogs are welcome to join you on this adventure, though they might need some assistance with the ladder.

    Red Mountain Trail #159 offers a rare chance to explore the exposed core of an ancient volcano, a geological marvel.
