The thirty-year-old Nelson Mandela bridge in Zoetermeer was dismantled at an accelerated rate at the end of 2022 because the part above the A12 was about to collapse. There is currently (2023) an emergency bridge. The covered bridge was designed for the Floriade by architect Johan Bak. In 2012, the bridge was voted one of the ugliest places in the Netherlands.

Hiking
By naming this (once historic) bridge, the city of Zoetermeer honors a deserving Nobel Peace Prize winner: Nelson MANDELA (born 1918, Nobel Peace Prize 1993, died 2013) dedicated his long life to non-violent resistance against the apartheid policy (racial segregation) in South Africa.
