The Smith - Little Salmon Trail offers a demanding hiking experience through Montana's Flathead National Forest, leading you past rugged peaks, serene alpine lakes, and impressive cascading waterfalls. You will hike through towering coniferous forests and along big river valleys, including the South Fork Flathead River, experiencing dramatically different ecosystems. This difficult route covers 10.3 miles (16.6 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3543 feet (1080 metres), typically taking around 6 hours and 3 minutes to complete.
When planning your visit, be aware that creeks can swell significantly from snowmelt during May and June, which might require you to ford rivers. The area is home to abundant wildlife, including grizzly and black bears, so always carry bear spray and practice proper food storage to ensure your safety. This trail is also shared with horses, so be mindful of other users on the path.
This preserved mountain ecosystem is an integral part of the vast Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, offering a true wilderness experience. You will notice the distinct shift in scenery from lush forests on the west side of the Continental Divide to more rugged, rocky landscapes with sweeping vistas as you move east. It is a notable route for those seeking a deep immersion in a wild, untamed environment.
