On the adjacent Beethovenplatz stands the monumental bronze sculpture of Ludwig van Beethoven, a work by the renowned German artist Markus Lüpertz. This sculpture is not a classic, realistic depiction of the composer, but rather a modern interpretation of his genius and inner turmoil. It shows Beethoven as a powerful, almost archaic figure, whose facial features reflect the intensity of his creativity and suffering. Lüpertz chose an expressive formal language that, through rough surface textures and deliberate abstraction, visualizes the timeless power of Beethoven's music.
