    Road cycling

Another lovely welsh road, mainly quiet with a perfect view of Lake Bala. Bala is Wale's largest natural lake with it's deep and clear waters. The lake is popular for canoeing and sailing as well as being a perfect open water swimming spot, ideal for a quick cool down on a hot ride.
The Llangower station is very small but does have a public toilet open at most hours so can be a welcome sight for a needy cyclist.

Llangower provides access to the lakeside for walks, picnics and bird watching. The stop also offers access to the car park and adjacent toilet facilities provided by the Snowdonia National Park.

There is a passing loop and small signal box here which is used on gala days and for the pink timetable to allow trains to pass.

A beautiful little picnic area for a stop and a break before cycling them hills again.

Embark on a challenging road cycling loop from Bala, exploring Llyn Tegid and Llyn Efyrnwy in Snowdonia National Park. This moderate 33.6-mile (54.1 km) ride features a significant 2929 feet (893 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 2 hours and 49 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, from serene lake views of Wales' largest natural lake, Llyn Tegid, to the dramatic ascent of Bwlch-y-Groes, the highest road pass in Wales, offering panoramic mountain vistas.

This route is classified as moderate to hard, requiring good to very good fitness due to its substantial climbs and hilly sections. Be prepared for some steep, narrow roads, especially in mountainous areas, and note that while most surfaces are well-paved, some segments might be unpaved or difficult to ride. Plan your visit with adequate preparation for a demanding but rewarding experience through the Welsh countryside.

Recognized as the most popular road cycling route in Snowdonia, this loop is a classic for those seeking both a physical challenge and stunning natural beauty. It showcases the diverse landscapes of North Wales, from remote mountain cwms to lush valley pastures, and includes the notable Lake Vyrnwy Dam. Conquering Bwlch-y-Groes and circumnavigating two significant lakes makes this a memorable ride, highlighting the raw natural beauty of the Bala area.

Prepare for a challenging racebike adventure on the Stwlan Dam climb from Bala loop, a difficult route spanning 54.5 miles (87.7 km). You will conquer a significant 5270 feet (1606 metres) of elevation gain, with an estimated duration of 4 hours and 47 minutes. The highlight is the brutal yet beautiful ascent to Stwlan Dam, where you'll navigate numerous hairpin bends, a unique feature for a UK climb. As you pedal, magnificent panoramic views of Snowdonia National Park unfold around you. The broader loop also offers scenic sections with glimpses of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) and winding roads like the B4391, making for a truly rewarding experience.

When planning your ride, note that the Stwlan Dam climb itself uses a very narrow service road. This road is closed to general car traffic, which ensures a peaceful cycling experience with minimal vehicle disturbance. While the private access road is generally in great condition, be aware of a potentially uneven, rocky, or muddy section at the very start of the dam approach. This route demands a very good level of fitness due to its steep and sustained gradients, so come prepared for a serious workout.

This route stands out for its formidable ascent, making it a true test of endurance for any cyclist. The climb to Stwlan Dam is particularly notable for its unique hairpin bends, a rare sight on UK climbs. Beyond the dam, the loop provides diverse scenery, including views of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) and the scenic B4391 road, offering a comprehensive exploration of the region's natural beauty.
