Bude Canal loop to Bude Marsh & Pethericks Mill Marsh

Embark on an easy hike along the Bude Canal loop to Bude Marsh & Pethericks Mill Marsh, a route that spans 3.8 miles (6.0 km) with a minimal elevation gain of 64 feet (20 metres), typically taking about 1 hour and 32 minutes to complete. You will enjoy tranquil views of the freshwater canal, often lined with reedbeds, and pass historic canal structures like old lock gates. The trail leads you through the Bude Marshes, a Local Nature Reserve, where you can observe diverse wildlife from a dedicated bird hide, and continues to the damp grasslands of Pethericks Mill Marsh.

This accessible loop is suitable for various fitness levels, offering generally flat terrain with surfaced paths that are often paved or gravel. While many sections are suitable for prams or wheelchairs, be aware that some kissing gates might present a barrier. The path can also become muddy after rain, so choose your footwear accordingly. It is a family-friendly route, perfect for watching boats and kayaks on the canal, and dogs are welcome to join you.

The Bude Canal itself is a significant 19th-century engineering feat, originally built to transport lime-rich sand inland using a unique system of wheeled "tub boats" and inclined planes. The Bude Marshes hold the distinction of being Cornwall's first Local Nature Reserve, established in 1955, and play a crucial role in the Bude Flood Prevention Scheme. Pethericks Mill Marsh was specifically designed to enhance flood storage and boost the area's wildlife conservation value, making this loop a blend of natural beauty and historical importance.
