Brackenheim Castle in the historic old town of Brackenheim has a varied history spanning over 800 years. The three-winged Renaissance complex developed from a medieval town castle into a representative residential palace and later served as an administrative headquarters as well as the backdrop for the childhood of the first German Federal President, Theodor Heuss.

Before 1556, a castle belonging to the Lords of Magenheim stood on the site of Brackenheim Castle. Between 1556 and 1559, master builder Martin Berwart, commissioned by Duke Christoph of Württemberg, constructed the three-winged castle. It served as a Württemberg widow's residence and hunting lodge. The castle acquired its present form through master builder Weiss, who oversaw the necessary reconstruction between 1677 and 1685 following a fire in 1670. The west wing and the northern transverse wing were affected by the fire. Later, the property was used as the residence of the chief bailiff and as an administrative seat.
