The citadel above the old town is an attraction for many locals and tourists. The Drususstein dates back to Roman times on the citadel grounds. Since 1055 there was a Benedictine monastery, which was dedicated to St. James. The expansion of the Jakobsbergs fortress began around 1620 under Elector Johann Schweickhard von Kronberg, the construction of the citadel finally took good three decades later Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn in attack.
Today, the citadel houses various municipal offices and is also the venue for numerous cultural events, such as the here since 1975 OpenOhr Festival.
