There is a considerable difference in elevation between the (bourgeois) Old Town and the Freiheit (Freedom) and the Burgberg (Castle Hill). This also means that the city is characterized by numerous staircases and sunken lanes. The Red Steps run along a hillside and connect the upper end of Burgstraße with Freiheit between the Evangelical Afra Church and the Outer Burgtor. Where the Red Steps meet Freiheit, there is a particularly impressive view of the ensemble consisting of the Outer Burgtor, the towers of the cathedral, and the gable of the Prelate's House.
