The first castle was built in 1341. From 1545 to 1564 the Order of St. John built a new castle. Located near Küstrin, Sonnenburg and the palace were destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. The Lord Master Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen therefore had a new residential palace built between 1662 and 1667.
Until 1945, the palace was the seat of Lord Master Prince Oskar of Prussia. It had survived the Second World War without damage, but burned down in 1973 under circumstances that are still unclear today. Only the main walls have survived.
