    Running

Sugarloaf Mountain is a relatively low peak, however it rises 800 feet above the surrounding farmland, creating a glorious view.

The trails around the peak are mostly through forested areas and can become rocky underfoot, so make sure you're wearing supporting sneakers.

    Hiking

Sugarloaf Mountain has been designated a Registered Natural Landmark because of its geological interest and striking beauty.

Stronghold agreed to maintain its natural state. Funds for maintenance and improvement do not come from federal, state, or municipal sources. They come from a modest trust fund, from membership dues, and from gifts and bequests of folks.

The Northern Peaks Trail Loop offers a challenging jogging experience across 6.9 miles (11.0 km) of diverse and often rugged terrain. You will navigate through dense deciduous forests, where towering oaks and scattered mountain laurel create a vibrant canopy. While the summit views from Sugarloaf Mountain can be partially obscured, the White Rocks North Viewpoint provides expansive panoramic vistas of the surrounding Frederick Valley, making the 1151 feet (351 metres) of elevation gain well worth the effort. This difficult route, typically completed in 1 hour and 47 minutes, is perfect if you are seeking a demanding workout with significant elevation changes.

Planning your visit requires some preparation for this route. The trails are generally well-marked, but carrying a digital navigation tool can be helpful, especially at intersections where paths converge. Due to the rocky and root-filled sections you will encounter, sturdy trail running shoes are highly recommended to ensure comfort and stability. Consider visiting in spring to see wildflowers burst into color, or in fall for stunning leaf changes, enhancing your jogging experience.

This trail is a popular destination for elevation training, largely due to its convenient proximity to both Washington D.C. and Baltimore. As you jog, keep an eye out for local wildlife; deer, foxes, and various bird species are common inhabitants of these woods. The Northern Peaks Trail Loop stands out as a robust option for those looking to push their limits on a natural, varied course.
