Embark on a moderate hike around the stunning Vatersay Beaches, a 3.0-mile (4.9 km) loop that takes about 1 hour and 14 minutes to complete. You will gain 140 feet (43 metres) in elevation as you explore diverse terrain, moving from grassy footpaths to the soft sands of Traigh Shiar Beach and Traigh a Bhaigh Beach. The deeply indented coastline offers dramatic views across the Sandray Sound, providing a true sense of island exploration.
Before you set out, be aware that parts of the path can be boggy and muddy, especially after rain, so wear appropriate footwear. Some sections are pathless, meaning good navigational skills will be helpful to stay on track. You can find convenient parking, a cafe, and toilets near the Vatersay Community Hall, which marks the start of this scenic route.
This trail is a fantastic way to experience Vatersay's unique natural environment. In summer, the machair, a fertile low-lying grassy plain, bursts with vibrant wildflowers, adding splashes of color to the landscape. Keep a keen eye out along Vatersay Sound; you might even spot otters playing in the water, making for a memorable wildlife encounter.
