Embark on the Monte Zatta Loop, a difficult hike that challenges you with 3206 feet (977 metres) of elevation gain over 10.7 miles (17.2 km). You will spend an estimated 7 hours and 19 minutes traversing varied terrain, from cool, dense beech forests to exposed ridge lines. As you climb, the trail opens up to panoramic views of the Val Graveglia and the sparkling Ligurian Riviera. The summit of Monte Zatta, marked by a distinctive cross, offers a perfect spot to take in the vast mountain landscape, including Monte Chiappozzo.
Before you set out, be aware that some parts of the Monte Zatta Loop require careful attention. Near the summit of Zatta di Ponente, you will encounter exposed areas and a very short equipped section, featuring a chain and a metal stirrup to assist your ascent. The route is generally well-marked with the A10 signpost and the familiar red and white stripes of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, guiding you along the way. You can also find fresh water springs along the trail, such as near Monte Prato Pinello, which are useful for refilling your bottles during this long hike.
This challenging route is nestled within the Aveto Natural Regional Park, an area known for its diverse ecosystems and stunning natural beauty. The trail's journey through ancient beech forests highlights the park's rich flora, providing a sense of immersion in nature. Reaching the ridge lines offers a unique perspective, connecting you visually to the broader Ligurian landscape and its coastal charm. It is a rewarding experience for those seeking a demanding yet scenic adventure in this region.
