The second surviving city gate of Valkenburg is the Grendelpoort, built around 1330, which was originally called the Maastrichterpoort. On both sides of the Grendelpoort, above the archway, there is a niche with a figure of a saint depicting Saint Mary.

This fourteenth-century city gate was also called Bergerpoort or Maestrichterpoort, after the places to which this gate led.
The Grendelpoort, named after a nearby fountain, survived the destruction of Valkenburg Castle in 1672 and has recently been extensively restored. On the outside of the gate is a large bronze statue of a gatekeeper in traditional dress.
