Embark on the High Divide and Seven Lakes Basin Loop for an unforgettable journey through Olympic National Park's diverse landscapes. This difficult 17.7 miles (28.5 km) hiking route, with its 4031 feet (1229 metres) of elevation gain, guides you from dense old-growth forests past cascading waterfalls like Sol Duc Falls, up to the High Divide. From this ridge, you'll be treated to sweeping views of Mount Olympus and the stunning Seven Lakes Basin, a collection of pristine alpine lakes like Heart Lake, often bursting with wildflowers in summer.
While some experienced hikers tackle this as a challenging day trip, taking around 9 hours and 9 minutes, it's more commonly enjoyed as a 1 to 3-night backpacking adventure. Permits are required for overnight stays and are highly competitive, so secure them well in advance; bear canisters are also mandatory. The best time to visit is typically mid-July through September, after most of the snow has melted, though you should always be prepared for changeable weather conditions.
This loop is celebrated as one of Washington State's most beautiful hikes, offering a unique combination of lush rainforests and high alpine environments. Keep an eye out for wildlife, as elk, bear, and deer are frequently sighted in the Seven Lakes Basin area. The dramatic scenic diversity and challenging terrain make it a top choice for those seeking a truly immersive wilderness experience in the Pacific Northwest.
