The Saint-Jean bridge was built shortly before 1259 and completed the system of bridges in the Lower Town. It was not possible to cross the Stalden – the historic link between the upper and lower parts of the city – with loaded convoys. Coming from the right bank – via the aptly named Karrweg (chariot path) – or from Bourguillon, they took the Saint-Jean bridge to reach the upper town via the Grand-Fontaine. Originally, the bridge was made of wood, covered and protected.
It was rebuilt in stone in 1746.
