It was originally built in 1813 as a wooden structure by the Swiss engineer Charles-Philippe De Bosset, who was the island's governor at the time. Later, it was rebuilt in stone.
Originally, it was intended to connect Argostoli with the mainland, facilitating access to the city, as one previously had to go around the Koutavos Lagoon.
