The Vest was built around 1593 after a design by Adriaen Anthonisz., mayor of Alkmaar. The two water gates, the Boerenboom and the Ouwe Gouwboom, were built in 1608. Just like in the Ouwe Gouwboom, there is a partition in this water gate that could close the opening in the Vest.
