Embark on a moderate hike from Spello to Collepino, a journey of 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with an elevation gain of 1209 feet (369 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 56 minutes. You will walk through picturesque olive groves and Mediterranean scrubland, with sections winding through woods. A unique feature of this route is following an ancient Roman aqueduct, parts of which are still visible above ground, offering panoramic views of the Chiona valley and the Apennine hills.
While much of the initial 4-5 kilometers is almost flat, the final ascent to Collepino involves a steeper climb, which can be challenging. The trail is generally considered suitable for most ages and fitness levels, but be prepared for that last push. You can find interpretive boards along the route providing historical information about the aqueduct, enhancing your understanding of the region's past.
This trail stands out for its blend of natural beauty and historical significance, connecting the medieval village of Spello with the remote, restored castle village of Collepino. It offers consistent stunning views of the Umbrian valley and provides an opportunity to experience the true essence of Umbria, away from crowds, appreciating the local flora and fauna.
