Mequon Nature Preserve

The Mequon Nature Preserve Loop Trail offers a delightful journey through a mosaic of natural environments, from restored prairies bursting with wildflowers to serene wetlands and mature hardwood forests. You'll find yourself immersed in active conservation, with the chance to spot diverse bird species and enjoy the tranquility of nature. Don't miss the 40-foot observation tower, which provides sweeping views of the preserve and, on clear days, the Milwaukee skyline.

This easy 3.1-mile (5.0 km) hike has a minimal 77 feet (24 metres) of elevation gain and takes about 1 hour and 16 minutes, making it suitable for nearly all fitness levels. The trail surface varies between gravel, grass, and mulch, with many sections being ADA compliant. The preserve is free and open daily from sunup to sundown, offering flexibility for your visit, and there's plenty of parking available.

Beyond the main loop, the Mequon Nature Preserve boasts over six miles of interconnected trails, allowing you to extend your exploration. It's recognized as an eBird hotspot by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with 184 bird species recorded, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. Families will appreciate Marty's Playspace, a natural playground, and educational signage throughout the trails provides fascinating insights into the local ecosystems.
