In the 19th century, there were quarries established to the south of the river Wear near Penshaw and this tunnel connected a quarry to staithes on the river to enable the shipment of stone towards Sunderland and beyond.

On Seaham Harbour,the smaller harbour stonework, an inscription states the stone came from this quarry. London Bridge relocated to Arizona is also made with that stone!

Hiking

The around Cox Green is a lovely route. It can (in most cases) get very clarty/muddy. So I'd recommend wearing trail shoes/boots/wellies or trainers that your not going to be bothered about getting muddy.
