At that time there were two monasteries in the area: the monastery of Pontida and the monastery of San Egidio di Fontanella, the first founded in 1076 and the second between 1080 and 1090.
It is therefore logical to think that there was a connection between the two monasteries, and the Canto represented an obligatory point of passage.
