Romans from the Schams originally used the place as an alpine area. Around 1300, mainly Walsers immigrated from the Italian Pomat (Val Formazza). Until 1277, Medels was under the protection of the Barons of Sax-Misox, after which it came into the possession of the Barons of Vaz.
