This boundary stone is one of several witnesses to former border lines. From 1816, a national border ran across the high plateau of the High Fens: initially between the Netherlands and Prussia, from 1830 between Belgium and Prussia, and from 1870 between Belgium and Germany. The line stretched from Eupen up the Hill to its source, continued to Baraque Michel and along the Neue Vequée to just before Hockai. From there, it continued along the Rotwasserbach (Eau Rouge) in the direction of Malmedy.

The original border markings in the High Fens were first placed in 1817 in the form of oak posts, after the border between Prussia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands had been established following the Congress of Vienna in 1815. From around 1840, the wooden posts were gradually replaced by stone border markers. These stones were numbered along the entire former border.
