Embark on a challenging hike through the Maritime Alps on the Rocca di San Bernolfo – Valle Stura trail. This difficult route covers 7.8 miles (12.6 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3076 feet (937 metres), typically taking around 6 hours and 3 minutes to complete. You will start near the alpine village of San Bernolfo, following former military roads that transition to rugged, rocky terrain and uneven mule tracks as you ascend. Look for rhododendrons and larches along the way, and enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the Maritime Alps from the Rocca di San Bernolfo summit, along with picturesque alpine lakes like San Bernolfo Lake, Lake di Mezzo, and Lake di Seccia.
This trail is best suited for experienced hikers due to its length, considerable elevation gain, and sections with steep ascents and slight exposure, especially towards the summit. While the full loop is rated for expert excursionists, the initial parts leading to Rifugio Laus and San Bernolfo Lake are considered easier for those with good fitness. You can find a resting point at Rifugio de Alexandris Foches, also known as Rifugio Laus, which may also offer overnight stays. Be prepared for varied terrain, including gravel, cobbled paths, and scree slopes.
Beyond the natural beauty, the Rocca di San Bernolfo trail offers a journey through history. You will traverse old military roads and encounter numerous ruins of military structures that were part of the Alpine Wall, constructed between the two World Wars. Keep an eye out for a curious "ship's bow" shaped pulpit near a main barracks, a unique historical feature. The area is also known for its wildlife; you might spot mountain goats in the higher elevations, and rock climbers are drawn to formations like the Guglia di San Bernolfo.
