    Hiking

A place formerly dedicated to trade and commerce, the Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe is located at the meeting point of the then most important access routes to the Upper Town.

According to tradition, this square owes its name to the ancient presence of the Guild of Shoemakers, which had its headquarters in the fourteenth-century building whose facade is still preserved, where the funicular station stands today.

Translated, the square means 'square of the shoe market'. In 1430 only trading in shoes was allowed here.

Today the upper cable car station is on the square.
