The meaning seems to derive from a root "brom or brum", presumably Latin. Being mountain locations, the etymology could consist of the classic mist, "winter", "frost", or in the vulgar Latin "brumosus" that is resinous.
Brumano in Valle Imagna is an Italian town of 117 inhabitants located at an altitude of 950 m a.s.l.
Recent studies would make the first permanent settlements date back to Roman times.
