Race Point Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse on the Cape Cod National Seashore that is still in operation by the Coast Guard. The original tower was first lit in 1816, but was replaced in 1876 with the current 45-foot tall iron-plated tower with a new keeper's house. The current light is powered by a solar electrical system with a wind turbine-powered back-up generator. You can go on a tour of this lighthouse and the surrounding historical buildings, and actually stay overnight if you get reservations ahead of time.

Embark on an easy hike to the historic Race Point Lighthouse, a journey that takes you through the diverse landscapes of Cape Cod National Seashore. This 3.5-mile (5.6 km) route offers a gentle experience, with only 17 feet (5 metres) of elevation gain, making it suitable for all skill levels. As you walk, you'll transition from shrubby areas to expansive sandy beaches and a vibrant saltwater marsh. The trail culminates with sweeping views of the Atlantic waves and majestic dunes, a perfect reward for your approximately 1 hour and 24 minutes of hiking.

You can begin your adventure at the Hatches Harbor parking lot, which provides convenient access to the trailhead. Since the route is largely exposed to the elements, remember to bring adequate sun protection, especially on sunny days. During the warmer summer months, particularly when passing through marshy sections, mosquitoes can be present, so it is wise to carry insect repellent. Planning your visit with these considerations will ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the dynamic coastal environment of Cape Cod, where land meets sea. The saltwater marsh is a prime location for observing various shorebirds and herons, adding a wildlife viewing element to your hike. The historic Race Point Lighthouse itself stands as a testament to the region's maritime heritage, offering a tangible connection to the past. This route provides a comprehensive glimpse into the natural beauty and history of the Outer Cape.

Embark on the Race Point Beach and Dunes Loop, a moderate hike that takes you through the unique coastal landscape of Cape Cod. This 5.9 miles (9.6 km) route features expansive, rolling sand dunes that can feel like a desert, interspersed with patches of coastal vegetation. You will gain 105 feet (32 metres) over an estimated 2 hours and 26 minutes, enjoying sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and spotting the historic Race Point Lighthouse and rustic dune shacks along the way.

When planning your visit, be aware that the moderate difficulty of this trail comes primarily from walking through soft, shifting sand, which requires sturdy footwear. This terrain can be more demanding than firm ground, so prepare accordingly. Parking is generally available near the starting point, such as the Province Lands Visitor Center, making access straightforward for your adventure.

This loop offers a truly unique coastal experience within the Cape Cod National Seashore, setting it apart from many other trails in the region. The combination of vast dunes, ocean vistas, and historical structures like the lighthouse and dune shacks provides a distinct charm.
