The stone cross originally stood on the north-eastern outskirts of Birkigt. Through the purchase in 1931, it became the property of the Thuringian local history museum in Saalfeld, now the city museum at the Franciscan monastery, where it first stood in the cloister and later in the monastery courtyard. On September 28th, 1993, after the missing base was completed, the atonement cross could be re-erected. The application was made by the municipality in 1992

The medieval stone cross of Birkigt cannot tell an exact history. It used to have a different location in the village and was in a museum in Saalfeld for a while. Now it stands a stone's throw from the village church in the middle of the village

The stone cross originally stood northeast on the outskirts of Birkigt. In 1931 it became the property of the Thuringian local history museum in Saalfeld, now the city museum at the Franciscan monastery, where it first stood in the cloister and later in the monastery courtyard. In 1992 the municipality submitted an application for retransfer and so the atonement cross could be re-erected at its current location a year later.
