Embark on the Big Horn Mine Trail, an easy hiking route spanning 3.8 miles (6.1 km) with an elevation gain of 643 feet (196 metres). You can expect to complete this journey in about 1 hour and 50 minutes. As you hike, you will experience varied terrain, moving through meadows and areas with tall pine trees, all while enjoying views of the San Gabriel Mountains. The highlight of the route is reaching the historic Big Horn Mine, offering a unique glimpse into the past.
When planning your visit, note that the trail is generally accessible year-round, though it sees more visitors from April to October. You will find parking available at the Vincent Gap - Mount Baden-Powell Trailhead. Be aware that the altitude might make some of the inclines feel a bit more challenging than expected. Always exercise caution if you choose to explore the old mine structures, as they are deteriorating.
This trail is located within the Angeles National Forest and is notable for its well-preserved historical site. The abandoned Big Horn Mine features surprisingly intact structures from a 19th-century gold mining operation. This offers a tangible connection to the region's rich history and provides a distinct point of interest along your hike.
