It is the only gate that is preserved today, of the seven that the old wall that surrounded Ciudad Real once had. It had various functions throughout its history, serving as a patrol gate for the surveillance of the city, to a toll gate or gate where taxes were paid on the transport of goods and people from Toledo to Seville.
