The Peak District has plenty of extraordinary hills and summits and you’ll find one of them, Win Hill, in its gritstone, heather-strewn heart. A fantastic place to explore whether you’re on a full day’s adventure or a short walk, this marvellous hill towers above the Hope Valley, to the south and the Ladybower Reservoir, to the north.

The crag on top of the hill is known as Win Hill Pike, or the Pimple. This rocky summit makes the hill even more distinctive, and is great fun to walk along as the rest of the terrain falls away beneath you. From the summit, you can find a path leading north west to the mighty plateau of Kinder Scout.

An enormously satisfying summit in the Dark Peak

You can hike to Win Hill from plenty of places, as it’s held in a web of footpaths that criss-cross the national park. The most straightforward way to reach the summit is from the village of Hope to the south west where you’ll find parking, facilities and food outlets. An alternative option is from the village of Bamford or the car park to the east of the dam at Ladybower Reservoir.

The summit sits at 1,516 feet (462 m) and offers fantastic views across the Dark Park region. The reservoir is clearly visible below to the north, as is the glorious Hope Valley to the south. Lose Hill, Edale Moor and Kinder Scout rise in the western view. The vistas change with the hours, days, weeks and seasons, so you rarely witness quite the same scene twice. Low mist, clouds, brilliant sunshine, purple heather and white snow all take their turns here.

Win Hill offers no technical challenges but take great care at the summit, as it has steep drops and the conditions can change very quickly. An ascent in winter conditions should be left to experienced winter hikers.
