district court in Heiligenstadt. He got to know Eichsfeld during court hearings and excursions.
In May 1857 he hiked with his family and friends from Lindewerra to the Teufelskanzel.
He set a literary monument to this hike and its destination in his novella Eine Malerarbeit (1867), in
which he enthusiastically described the ascent through the "mountain gorge" and the view from the rock of the legendary Teufelskanzel. (...from information board)
