Capo Palinuro lighthouse. From here begins the pilgrim's path or Torri e Fortini. The track is particularly damaged and in several places dug by the rain that has brought out high and sharp rocks. MTB is not recommended

    Hiking

The lighthouse, symbol of Palinuro, is one of the highest in Italy with its 70 meters of height. It cannot be visited inside as it is a military area, but from here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the gulf and the coast of Capo Palinuro.

    Hiking

The highest point is military grounds (closed off), but even from the gate you have a good view of the peninsula

Capo Palinuro – loop tour in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park

    300m

Embark on a moderate hike around Capo Palinuro, a loop tour spanning 4.5 miles (7.2 km) with an elevation gain of 1009 feet (307 metres). This rewarding route, which you can complete in about 2 hours and 21 minutes, guides you along dramatic cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. You will experience rugged coastal terrain, with paths winding through Mediterranean vegetation and scattered pine forests, offering panoramic views of the picturesque Cilento coastline and the promontory's distinctive "five-fingered" shape.

To make the most of your visit, plan your hike from spring to late autumn; spring is particularly ideal for witnessing the rare Primula Palinuri in bloom. The trails are generally well-marked, but some sections can be narrow and rocky, so good footing is essential. Always remember to carry a map, sufficient water, and a packed lunch, especially for longer treks, and consider bringing swimwear if you hike during the warmer summer months.

This trail, often known as the "Path of Forts and Towers," is rich in history, featuring ancient watchtowers and forts from the 16th to 18th centuries that once defended the coast from Saracen pirate invasions. You will also pass the Capo Palinuro lighthouse, one of Italy's highest at 70 meters, offering expansive views. The area is also notable for its unique biodiversity and mythological significance, deriving its name from Palinurus, the helmsman in Virgil's Aeneid.
