Bad Steben is the northernmost state spa in Bavaria. Before being granted the title of Royal Bavarian State Spa, the town was called Steben and was the center of mining in the Franconian Forest. The town was first documented on December 25, 1374, as "zu den Steben."

The Town Hall Lion is part of the "Lion-Strong Bad Steben" art project. Originally, 22 such lions were installed in 2004, of which 19 can still be seen today. The "Town Hall Lion" was painted by the artist Werner Schwenke.
