In the Tejera Negra forests are the southernmost beech forests in Europe, included in the protected area of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park, together with other small stands of beech in Montejo de la Sierra, in Madrid, Riofrío de Riaza, in Segovia, and the Vallcaneres ravine, in Tarragona, known as the Fageda del Retaule, the Retablo Beech Forest. The Tejera Negra forest was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2017.
