You'll navigate a mix of technical singletrack, fire roads, and old paved sections, with the highlight being the historic Mueller Tunnel and the 360-degree panoramic views from Mount Disappointment's summit, stretching across Los Angeles to the ocean. This difficult 34.1-mile (54.8 km) route involves a substantial 6840 feet (2085 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 5 hours and 51 minutes, and is best suited for advanced riders.
To tackle this challenging route, start from Altadena with plenty of water and be prepared for sustained climbs. The trail can be particularly tough due to erosion and loose sediment, especially in areas affected by lingering spring snow. While some sections are car-free, always check current trail conditions before you go, as the terrain demands your full attention and skill.
This loop offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. You'll encounter remnants of the Mount Lowe Railway and other historical ruins, adding an extra layer to your adventure. The summit of Mount Disappointment, despite its name, provides unparalleled views and a glimpse into its past as a Nike missile site, now hosting telecommunications towers.
