In 1920 the Royal Athenaeum occupied a large part of the building, until various municipal administration services were transferred there. After purchasing the abbey building in 1985, extensive renovation and conversion work began. This is how places of remembrance, history and culture were created. Under the name "Malmundarium" the final result meets all expectations. The former monastery is now an interactive and entertaining center for young and old.

The French Revolution finally put an end to the Principality of Stavelot-Malmedy. With the end of the principality, the monastery lost its religious use. Under the French and, from 1815, also under the Prussian regime, the former monastery building played a game of tree change: magistrate's court, prison, militia, health resort, public prosecutor's parquet, grammar school, ... there was hardly a function that the building did not fulfill.
