    Hiking

Beautiful, but can be a tough hike. On the way up there's some logs and fallen trees commonly used for resting.

In particular, I love the moments you walk across the bridges over streams and often have a great view down the mountain.

Embark on the Chirico and High School Trail Loop, a moderate hiking adventure that offers a diverse experience in the West Tiger Mountain Natural Resources Conservation Area. This route spans 6.9 miles (11.1 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 1793 feet (547 metres), typically taking around 4 hours and 6 minutes to complete. You will find yourself navigating the steep ascent of the Chirico Trail, which contrasts with the more gradual High School Trail, both leading to the renowned Poo Poo Point. From this popular paragliding launch site, you can enjoy expansive views of Puget Sound, and on clear days, spot Lake Sammamish, Squak and Cougar Mountains, the Seattle skyline, and even Mt. Rainier.

When planning your visit, be aware that sections of the trail can become quite muddy, especially during wetter seasons, so appropriate footwear is advisable. If you choose to hike in winter, particularly on the High School Trail, you might find microspikes helpful if snow is present on the ground. Always check the latest local trail conditions before you head out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. This will help you prepare for any specific challenges the weather or season might present.

What makes this loop particularly appealing is its combination of challenging climbs and serene natural beauty. Beyond the panoramic vistas from Poo Poo Point, the High School Trail offers a peaceful journey through beautiful old-growth forest, where you will cross several creeks. This blend of strenuous activity and tranquil woodland exploration provides a well-rounded outdoor experience, highlighting the varied landscapes and natural features of the region.

If you're looking for a serious workout with a big payoff, the Poo Poo Point Trail – Poo Poo Point loop from Issaquah High School delivers a challenging 11.8-mile (19.0 km) hike. You'll climb 2979 feet (908 metres) over roughly 6 hours and 23 minutes, mostly through a beautiful, shaded forest. The path winds past flowing creeks, transitioning from younger growth to mixed deciduous and coniferous trees. The real reward comes at Poo Poo Point itself, where you'll get expansive views of Issaquah, Lake Sammamish, and the Olympic mountains, often with paragliders launching into the air.

Accessing this difficult route is straightforward from Issaquah High School. The trail is a popular year-round alternative to steeper options like the Chirico Trail, especially when higher elevation trails are snow-covered. Be prepared for varied terrain, including rocks, roots, and potentially muddy sections; trekking poles are a good idea, particularly on wet days. This loop is ideal for conditioning or a long trail run.

Poo Poo Point is famous as a paragliding launch site, offering a unique spectacle at the summit. The trail's name itself has a quirky history, inspired by the sound of steam whistles from old logging operations. This route provides a rigorous workout and stunning views, making it a fulfilling experience for hikers seeking a substantial day out near Issaquah.
