Built around 1540 as a gateway bastion for the state fortifications designed by Reinhard Graf Solms zu Münzenberg for Ingolstadt, the outer walls of the forecourt, numerous vaulted rooms, and a former vaulted passageway in the basement of the earth bastion have been preserved; it incorporated a section of the medieval city wall, around 1380 (see also city fortifications).
