The palisade fence surrounding the residential town of Ludwigslust since 1791 was replaced from 1822 onwards by a brick town wall infilled with bog iron ore. The churchyard wall, built between 1791 and 1792, served as a model. Work began under the architect Johann Georg Barca, who transformed the hunting lodge, which had been converted into a residence by Johann Joachim Busch, into a bourgeois town.

The old city wall is actually the youngest city wall in Germany. It is made of fired bricks and bog ironstone, which is also called "Klump".
