    Hiking

    Monteviasco
The village is located at an altitude of almost 1000 meters in the Varesine Pre-Alps, in the immediate hinterland of Lake Maggiore. Inaccessible to cars, it can only be reached via 1,400 steps or a cable car. Built entirely of local stone, from the streets to the roofs of the houses, it is a place where time stands still and where the past becomes present. From Monteviasco you can see Lake Maggiore.

    Hiking

Monteviasco at 930m above sea level, with hardly more than a dozen inhabitants. Here it has two cozy restaurants where you can eat.

Embark on Stage 9 of the Via Verde Varesina, a moderate hike that takes you through a varied landscape rich in history and natural beauty. This route covers 5.1 miles (8.2 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 2591 feet (790 metres), requiring about 4 hours and 22 minutes to complete. You'll experience charming traditional stone architecture as you pass through Monteviasco Village, and encounter the historic Piero Mills. Be ready for some challenging uphill sections, including the notable Monteviasco Stone Staircase, which adds to the adventure and offers a rewarding experience.

Before you set out, know that the trail is generally well-marked, making navigation straightforward. While the path is easy to follow, some sections involve considerable elevation changes, so prepare for both ascents and descents. Parking is usually available near trailheads in the Varese region, but it's always a good idea to confirm specific access points and parking options before your visit. This stage offers a balanced challenge for hikers.

Embark on a challenging yet rewarding hike on the Monte Gradiccioli loop, starting from Ponte di Piero. This difficult route covers 7.6 miles (12.2 km) and features a substantial elevation gain of 4323 feet (1318 metres), requiring about 7 hours to complete. You'll begin on a steep mule track, climbing towards Monteviasco, before continuing on well-defined paths to Alpe Corte and Capanna Merigetto. The final ascent to Monte Gradiccioli involves grassy slopes and a ridge walk, leading you to the summit where a beautiful granite cross marks your achievement.

To plan your visit, note that the starting point at Ponte di Piero is accessible by road from Luino. Be aware that the funicular to Monteviasco has been closed since 2018, so you will need to hike the initial ascent. This trail demands a good level of fitness, sure footing, and appropriate mountain footwear. Given its difficulty and duration, it's best to start early in the day to allow ample time for the full trek. Always check local conditions before heading out, especially regarding weather and trail accessibility.

From the summit of Monte Gradiccioli, which stands at 1936 metres, you are treated to spectacular panoramic views in every direction. You can gaze upon the central and western Alps, the vast expanse of Lake Maggiore (Verbano), and prominent peaks like Monte Rosa. The vista also extends to Val Formazza, the peaks of Valais, Oberland, Ticino, and the Rhaetian Alps, encompassing the entire Lugano area. For those seeking an even greater challenge, you have the option to extend your hike to other prominent peaks such as Monte Tamaro and Monte Gambarogno, though this would significantly increase the elevation gain.
