    Hiking

At 540 metres of altitude, you will reach the trig point of Bolts Law, from which you can observe the beautiful landscape that surrounds you. As a curiosity, it is slightly lower, by approximately one meter, than the highest point in the area, which is located southwest of the trig point.

Sikehead Dam and Rookhope loop — North Pennines

    15.5km

    04:23

    340m

    340m

Embark on the Sikehead Dam and Rookhope loop, a moderate hike spanning 9.6 miles (15.5 km) with an elevation gain of 1120 feet (341 metres). This route typically takes around 4 hours and 23 minutes to complete, leading you through a varied landscape of open fells, rugged moorland, and tranquil riverside paths. You will encounter undulating grassy sections and some steep climbs, especially when ascending to higher ground. The scenery blends natural beauty with historical remnants, offering breathtaking views across the Rookhope valley and visible remains of the lead mining industry, including the Sikehead Dams themselves.

When planning your visit, be prepared for varied terrain; some areas can be rough underfoot and potentially boggy, particularly after rain, so wear appropriate footwear. While specific trailhead access details are not universally defined for this loop, routes in the North Pennines often start from stone-built villages or designated parking areas. The difficulty can vary with specific sections, with some parts across open moorland being more challenging. Always check local conditions before you go, especially if you plan to hike during wetter seasons.

This trail is notable for its rich lead mining heritage, which profoundly shaped the landscape and local communities from the mid-1700s to the early 1900s. You will see tangible connections to this past, such as disused shafts, mine buildings, spoil heaps, and smelting mill chimneys. The area is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and a UNESCO Global Geopark, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty, unique geology, and cultural history. Hiking here offers a sense of solitude on the fells, providing a peaceful and immersive experience.
