Embark on the Monte Saben and Monte Croce Trail, a moderate hiking route that takes you through varied landscapes, from shaded forest paths to open ridges in the Maritime Alps foothills. This 6.8-mile (11.0 km) journey involves a significant elevation gain of 1820 feet (555 metres), typically completed in about 3 hours and 44 minutes. As you hike, you will experience the changing terrain and eventually reach the summit of Monte Saben, which offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of Valle Gesso and Valle Stura, with the dramatic snow-capped Maritime Alps in the distance.
Planning your visit is straightforward, as the trail is well-marked and popular among locals. Many hikers start from Sant'Antonio Aradolo, where you can find ample parking near the trailhead. While much of the route is pleasant, be prepared for a steep and potentially challenging final ascent to the summit, especially if the ground is muddy. This trail is rated as "E (Escursionistico)", so you should have a good level of fitness and be sure-footed for the best experience.
One of the unique features you will encounter on this route is the passage through Colla delle Piastre, which provides important views of the Stura Valley and its prominent peaks.
