They belonged to the Upper Harz ponds and served to supply the mines on the Bockswiese ore vein with stamp water. The stamp water was initially fed through the 1150 m long Auerhahner ditch to the Herzog-Anton-Ulrich shaft. The Auerhahn pond, in turn, was also supplied with water from the Schalke through the 1440 m long Bärenthaler ditch, which is now disused.
