Prepare for a moderate hike on the CAI 431 trail, leading you from the Cascate del Doccione to Monte Lancino. This route spans 4.5 miles (7.3 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 1797 feet (548 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 19 minutes to complete. You will journey through a dense beech and fir forest, where moss-covered boulders stand out against the forest floor. The path eventually opens up to reveal wildflower meadows, dotted with orchids and lilies, before reaching the summit of Monte Lancino.
To begin your adventure, drive from Fanano to Fellicarolo, where you will find parking available near the access point for the waterfalls. This well-marked trail ensures a straightforward journey, guiding you directly to the origin of the waterfalls and then alongside the stream. Consider starting your hike in the morning to fully enjoy the natural beauty and reach Rifugio i Taburri before late afternoon. The trail is best enjoyed during seasons when the waterfalls are active and the wildflowers are in bloom.
This trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the Modena Apennines, showcasing the region's highest waterfalls, the Cascate del Doccione, which boast a 24-metre vertical drop. As you ascend, the landscape transforms, culminating in sweeping views across the Tuscan-Emilian ridge from Monte Lancino. You can extend your experience by visiting Rifugio i Taburri, known for its warm hospitality and hearty mountain fare, including traditional polenta and homemade cakes.
