It is believed that the tomb of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, was in the church. The apocryphal Ransitus Mariae says that Mary was taken into heaven from this place with her body. The first chapel dedicated to the mother of Jesus was built here as early as the 4th century, and today's underground church of the tomb of Our Lady is looked after by Greek and Armenian monks.
