    Hiking

The Sashuis is a rare and fine example of a weir and closure with three weir holes, combined with a lock keeper's house erected above it, built ca. 1519 with a view to water management and water level control of the Bruges inland waterways, as a weir that was opened in 1895-'96. was renovated while preserving the natural stone substructure but replacing the traditional excavation work, which has a documentary value from an industrial-archaeological point of view.

The Sashuis is located a bit south of the historic center of the old town, in the immediate vicinity of the Beguinage. It takes about fifteen minutes to walk here from the market square.

The well-preserved building from the 16th century is the city's former lock house. Depending on the viewing angle, it looks like it's standing on water.

Otherwise it is one of many houses in the immediate vicinity

"Sashuis" built above the lock. Rare example of weir and closure work with three weir holes, one of which is bricked up (left), one with an iron closing plate (right) and centrally closed by a wooden door with a natural stone middle post. Detached building, originally built in 1519 following the reconstruction of the lock complex with a view to water management and water level control of the inner canals. Thoroughly restored in 1895-1896 to a design by architect L. Delacenserie (Bruges). The lock has been out of use since the 1970s.
